Michael Kalish

Michael Kalish was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1973. He attended the University of Rhode Island and Kennesaw University where he majored in psychology and minored in Art. Kalish gained recognition when he started experimenting with old licensed plates. He took old plates and repurposed them into something new and innovative. His first piece of this subject was an American flag. He then further expanded upon this medium, working further with license plates and old car parts, and expanding subject matter to a wide variety of portraits.

In 2014, Kalish began working on wall sculpture installations. He continues to work with scrap sheets of aluminum, creating multi-layered pieces that form an image from a specific vantage point. A common subject matter for this series is roses.

Kalish has had solo exhibitions in many museums and galleries in places such as Stockholm, Geneva, Los Angeles, and New York. Additionally, his work is a part of many private and public collections such as the US Embassy in Moscow, Ford Motor Company Collection, the Coca-Cola Corporation Collection and many more. Kalish is currently based in and working out of Los Angeles, California.
